21st-Century Technology

JOI has always been a leader in the use of technology without forgetting the essential fundamentals upon which we base the art and science of surveying. In the 1960s, large investments were made in programmable calculators and one of the first Swiss electronic distance meters in the United States. This has continued with the use of photogrammetry, computers and plotters in the 1970s and 80s, and GPS and a robotic total station in the 1990s. Today, we are working with laser scanning and other types of remote sensing technology, including generating digital terrain models from data collected by drone. JOI has always invested in high quality surveying instruments such as Wild and Leica from Switzerland and Hewlett-Packard from the United States. Some of the specific technologies we use today include:
- Leica total stations
- Leica GPS with real-time and post-processed accuracy enhancements
- AutoCAD Civil 3D
- an array of free & open-source GIS software, including QGIS & other OSGeo projects
- digital aerial imagery techniques
- Google Earth integration
